Math
ALGEBRA 1-4AB, ALGEBRA 1-4CD
Grades 9-10...2 semesters each....1 credit each
Algebra 1-4AB and CD courses cover all of the concepts of Algebra 1, but extends them over two years. The fundamentals are broken down and taught at a more in-depth and focused pace.
ALGEBRA 1
Grade 9....2 semesters......1 credit
Algebra 1 is designed to help expand understanding of mathematical concepts, improve problem solving strategies, provide real-life uses of mathematics, and to familiarize students with technologies. Topics are properties of real numbers, solving linear equations, graphing linear equations and functions, writing linear equations, solving and graphing linear inequalities, systems of linear equalities and inequalities, exponents and exponential functions, quadratic equations and functions, polynomials and factoring, and rational equations and functions. The goal of the course is to set a strong foundation in algebraic concepts needed to advance to higher levels of mathematical study.
ALGEBRA 1 HONORS
Grade 9....2 semesters......1 credit
The honors class includes all of the elements of Algebra 1, but includes additional problems which are multi-step and more abstract. Incoming ninth graders must take a placement test to advance to Algebra 1 Honors.
ALGEBRA 2
Grades 9-12....2 semesters.....1 credit
This course emphasizes conceptual understanding of the connections among symbols, graphs, and their applications. Topics are equations and inequalities, linear equations and functions, systems of linear equations and inequalities, matrices and determinants, quadratic functions, polynomials and polynomial functions, powers, roots and radicals, exponential and logarithmic functions, rational equations and functions, quadratic relations and conic sections, probability and statistics, trigonometric ratios and functions, and trigonometric graphs, identities, and equations. Transferring tenth and eleventh graders must pass a placement test to advance to Algebra 2. Prerequisite: Algebra 1
ALGEBRA 2 HONORS
Grades 9-12.....2 semesters.....1 credit
This course includes all of the elements of Algebra 2, but includes additional topics such as series and sequences. Tenth and eleventh graders must pass a placement test to advance to Algebra 2 Honors. Prerequisite: Algebra 1
GEOMETRY
Grades 10-12......2 semesters.... 1 credit
This course emphasizes inductive reasoning through student investigations of geometry conjectures. Topics include reasoning and proof, perpendicular and parallel lines, congruent triangles, properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, transformations, similarity, right triangles and trigonometry, circles, areas of polygons and circles, and surface area and volume. Incoming ninth and tenth graders must pass a placement test to advance to Geometry. Prerequisite: Algebra 1
GEOMETRY HONORS
Grades 10-12.....2 semesters......1 credit
This course includes all of the elements of Geometry, but covers geometric proofs in greater detail, explores non-Euclidean geometry, and has an extensive problem-solving component. Incoming ninth and tenth graders must pass a placement test to advance to Geometry Honors. Prerequisite: Algebra 1
Precalculus
Grades 11-12….2 semesters…..1 credit
In this course students use symbolic reasoning and analytical methods to represent mathematical situations, to express generalizations, and to study mathematical concepts and the relationships among them. Students use functions, equations, and limits as useful tools for expressing generalizations and as means for analyzing and understanding a broad variety of mathematical relationships. Students also use functions as well as symbolic reasoning to represent and connect ideas in geometry, probability, statistics, trigonometry, and calculus and to model physical situations. Students use a variety of representations (concrete, numerical, algorithmic, graphical), tools, and technology to model functions and equations and solve real-life problems. Prerequisites: Algebra 2, Geometry
